Also, Texas medical schools often offer competitive out-of-state applicants in-state tuition as an incentive to come to their schools. This is another thing that makes Texas medical schools great! • Insider Information

  • Research Oriented School. UT Southwestern medical school has a high research ranking for a reason. They are dedicated to innovation and research. As such, you should make this stand out on your application and in your interviews. However, they are also ranked in the top 25 in primary care, meaning that if you are more interested in that field, you should make that stand out on your application and in your interviews. You’ll mainly show this by being involved in community service for extended periods of time, preferably in leadership positions.
  • You’ll deliver a lot of babies. When I interviewed at UT Southwestern medical school, the students raved about their opportunities to deliver babies on their OB/GYN rotations. Students said they were often delivering several babies on their first day on the rotation! This rotation is done at Parkland Memorial Hospital which is Dallas’s County hospital. County hospitals are a great opportunity for medical student training since you are often allowed to do more than you are allowed to do at private hospitals.
  • More traditional curriculm.
During your first year at this medical school in Texas, you will have courses in anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, embryology, genetics, human behavior, immunology, neuroscience and physiology. During your second year you will study pathophysiology focusing on one organ system at a time. Your third and fourth years will consist of clinical rotations.
  • Work-Study Available. One thing that’s great about Texas medical schools is their affordability. UT Southwestern medical school takes this a step farther by offering work-study programs for medical students. These are jobs like working at a library where you can study while you work. This will help you cut down the cost of an already very affordable education at UT Southwestern.
  • Competitive culture. The grading system at UT Southwestern is a traditional bell curve system with letter grades. You will be given a class rank throughout your years of medical school. Because of this, students are generally trying to outperform each other. This can be good or bad, depending on your personality. Some people achieve greater things in this environment while others find it difficult and unfriendly.
  • You live in Texas! Living in Texas has great benefits. No income tax and low cost of living for starters. Plus you’ll find out why it is that everyone from Texas is so proud of it!

For a school as competitive as UT Southwestern, I would highly recommend coaching. There are many
companies that will help you with this, but my recommendation is MedSchoolCoach.

MedSchoolCoach is run by doctors with experience on admissions committees. This makes a big difference as many companies are run by business people or others without this essential experience.
