    • Cost of Living: The cost of living is very affordable, another benefit to attending medical school in Houston Texas. You can pay around $600 for a nice one bedroom near campus. You can also rent a 4 br house close to campus for $1200. Now that’s a great deal!
  • Insider Information

  • Clinically Oriented School. As discussed above, UT Houston medical school is focused on producing physicians who will serve underserved populations in Texas. As such, you should make this stand out on your application and in your interviews. You’ll mainly show this by being involved in community service for extended periods of time, preferably in leadership positions.
  • Beautiful facilities. This was one of the prettiest campuses I visited. The medical school is all new and you really feel like you’re in a designer building. The hospitals in the area are wonderful as well. One
thing I remember from MD Anderson was the adolescent room where kids could hang out with other kids and play video games or just relax.
  • Highly ranked for Hispanic students. The Hispanic Business Journal has consistently ranked UT Houston medical school in Houston Texas as one of the best for Hispanic medical students.
  • Affiliated with the #1 Cancer Research Hospital in the Country. MD Anderson is the #1 cancer research hospital in the nation (and is a beautiful hospital). Baylor is also affiliated with the hospital.
  • Organ-systems based curriculum. You’ll focus on normal structure and function of organ systems in the first year, abnormal structure and function in the second year. You’ll also have PBL (problem based learning) cases that will teach you about different diseases affecting different systems. For more about the medical school curriculum, click here.
  • Lectures recorded and attendance not required. This allows you to study the material at your own pace
  • Programs in place to help you if you struggle. Most medical schools have some recourse for students if they struggle, but this medical school in Houston Texas takes it to the next level. There is an early entry program where you can come before starting medical school and get used to the campus and review some of the basic curriculum. Tutoring is also available by second and fourth year students through medical school. Additionally, there is an “alternate pathway” for students from non-traditional backgrounds. This pathway is designed to “declerate” the pace of learning in the first and second years of medical school. All of this makes UT Houston medical school a great choice, particularly if you’re worried about the rigors of medical school.
  • Application through TMDSAS. This is a program specific for Texas schools. For more information
about the medical school application, click here.
  • You live in Texas! Living in Texas has great benefits. No income tax and low cost of living for starters. Plus you’ll find out why it is that everyone from Texas is so proud of it!

MedSchoolCoach is run by doctors with experience on admissions committees. This makes a big difference as many companies are run by business people or others without this essential experience.
